Staff Training - Expensive?

YOUR BUSINESS BUDGETS

Wherever businesses turn right now they are tightening their budgets. So what is part of your budget right now and have you been thinking about which parts of your budget you need to look at the most?

  • Employee Salaries: their wages, pension contributions and benefits your business may cater for

  • Operating Expenses: day to day costs to run your business such as rent or mortgage; utilities, maintenance, office supplies etc

  • Marketing and Advertising: promotion of your business including digital marketing campaigns, PR, promotional materials

What is included in your business budget?

  • Technology: IT infrastructure, software licences and subscriptions, website maintenance etc.

  • Taxes: Business taxes, income tax, property tax, VAT or Sales tax, regulatory fees

  • Capital Expenses: funds set aside for longer term investments such as vehicles, upgrades or renovations

LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT (ADDITIONAL TO HR)

So, if you have to set aside money for all of these obviously important factors in any business, where does your Staff Training fit?

Yes, you may have a HR Team which encompasses someone who can assist and lead your Learning & Development, Talent Direction and Management and Staff Training & Growth.

However I have been discovering more and more - that this isn't the case.

Employee Growth is so important

Most businesses will have a HR or People Team Department, however not everyone in that team knows about growing their staff through training, skills gap analysis and creating a strategy to ensure continuance in all department from junior to senior employees.

LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT EMPLOYEE vs LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT OUTSOURCING

I have worked as a HR and L&D employee, and sometimes due to budgetary restrictions and other internal workload, an internal employee may not always have:

  1. the expertise to create the right level of training, such as leadership for example;

  2. the timeframe to create a successful training / workshop program;

  3. the backing of the company to spend too much time on creating something that they can just 'buy off the shelf'.

Buy off the shelf Staff Training

There is an obvious disadvantage to buying training off the shelf. That is... that it is not aligned to your business requirements, your business values or roles.

It is also not always cost effective, especially if you have to adapt it yourself.

So...

The next step is to think about outsourcing your Learning & Development to a company who can listen to your requirements and strategise a solution.

OUTSOURCE IS YOUR ANSWER = HAPPY BUDGET / HAPPY STAFF / HAPPY BUSINESS

Every business wants to have an ability to meet their budget and have happy staff and a happy business growth.

So, how can outsourcing work for you?

  • you contact a company to find out how they work

  • the company will listen to your needs, research your company and fully understand what is required

  • the company will then come up with a solution which should include blended learning (face to face training & workshops, e-learning video content and train the trainer elements)

  • because you will not need this on an ongoing basis, you can schedule training to start at the beginning of each month for example of 1 day to a week and add this to your budget

  • your budget will be happy because you be able to meet other commitments as your outsourced L&D will often be cheaper than employing an L&D lead for your business (especially if a small business)

Outsourced Training can enhance your HR Team, not hinder it.
